My system is 12.1.1. Audios can not play. So disappointed.
  • Phone is a great way to read the Economist

Time is never wasted waiting when I can read the economist on my Apple 5s phone. It’s easy to read on a small screen and always close at hand.
  • If you listen to audio, it is frustrating app.

The app for reading is fine. We listen to the audio on our daily walks with the dog, (rather we try to listen), and it is utterly maddening. On iPhone 8plus and X, if we get a call, the audio pauses but when call ends, you cannot continue (the pause button still shows like it is still playing), we have to select another article or close the app and lose your place. On the old old app version, the current playing article stayed at the top and the section AND article being listened to would show at the bottom. Loved it. Now this version you cannot see where you are in the sections (ie US, Asia, Leaders) or what article is playing for the section , only at the top. I liked the old one because I could see how many articles were left. I’m seriously about to cancel my subscription because we only listen and this app is crap for that. Please fix it, it was so much better before!
  • App won’t play audio files

Audio files will not play. The audio files are a major reason I have this subscription. Fix asap please. Digital audio content is so much easier to consume for people with busy schedules.
  • Fantastic, but 2 annoying bugs...

It really bugs me that when swiping back to an article you have been reading it always scrolls to the top of the article. It’s annoying that it’s too easy to accidentally swipe away from an article and then lose your place when you swipe back. The other annoyance is when it sometimes doesn’t remember the font size I like, and you need to re-choose the desired size. (Maybe that has been fixed as I can’t reproduce it right now.) Content is fantastic - which is the primary reason for 4 stars. I also like the ability to listen to the articles when travelling.

Probably the least reliable app on my phone and also your phone.

A few issue deletions, forced app restarts, and days later; all is well for now. Original Review 1-star iPhone X iOS 12.1 audio for the World in 2019 edition will only play if the phone ringer is on (not vibrate) and the app is open with the screen on.
  • Great but for one annoying UX issue

I love the Economist, and this app is well-designed. The fact that there is an audio version of each article is great. However, the “swipe to next article” feature is way way too sensitive!! It’s very frustrating when I am scrolling vertically and accidentally move my finger a millimeter to the left, and the app moves to the next article. Compounding my frustration is the fact that when you go back to the article, it starts at the top so that you have to find your place again.

What should be the perfect subway read is a constant frustration of being declined because not able to verify identity to waiting for a advert to not load. Get out of your ivory tower economist
