Description

Editorial is a plain text editor for iOS with powerful automation tools and a beautiful inline preview for Markdown, TaskPaper, and Fountain documents. Features: * Inline Markdown/Fountain Preview – With Editorial's subtle syntax highlighting, you can see your document's formatting immediately while you're writing. And when you need a full HTML preview, it's just a swipe away. * Extensible with Workflows and Scripts – Select from over 50 text processing actions to create your own workflows for extending Editorial's feature set. For even more advanced automation, you can write Python scripts with an integrated code and UI editor. * Dropbox Sync – The sync folder is customizable, so you can easily edit your documents with multiple apps. * Smart Keyboard – The extended keyboard was specifically designed for writing Markdown and includes all the special characters you need. You can also control the cursor with simple swipe gestures. * Snippets – Quickly insert frequently-used pieces of text by typing abbreviations. Snippets can include dynamic text, e.g. the current date or clipboard contents. TextExpander™ snippets are also supported. * In-App Browser – If you need to do some quick research while writing, you don't have to leave the app for that. You can even open multiple tabs. * "Folding" allows you to quickly hide individual sections of your document while you're writing. *** *** *** “It would be hard to imagine a better editor, let alone recommend one that actually exists.” — The Verge “This is it. Editorial sets a new standard for third-party iOS automation, and, for me, there’s no going back.” — Federico Viticci, MacStories “Editorial just reinvented iOS text editing.” — Merlin Mann

Used to be the best text editor on iOS. No updates in over a year. :(
  • Abandonware

Well, this app was absolutely fantastic. Best in class, for sure. But it’s sadly been abandoned by the developer, and it’s really out of date now. Even Mac Power Users’ David Sparks and Mac Stories’ Federico Viticci — both previously fervent evangelists for Editorial — have famously moved on. So... don’t waste your time or money on this. Hopefully the developer will surprise us one day with a brand new version 2.0 for iOS 12 or 13.
  • Great editor, with one minor annoyance

Great editor, with Dropbox sync that works like a charm. The only annoyance is that even if it has an auto-capitalization feature, it does not work when creating lists (does not activate when typing ‘* ‘ on a new line).
  • Dropbox sync doesnt work right

Dropbox sync creates dozens of conflicted copies, even though I'm only editing my files with editorial. This is extremely confusing, and I've just lost some of my writing again because of that. Great app otherwise, but this issue makes it unusable, please fix it!
  • No Files support?!

Given how awesome omz’s Pythonista is, I had high hopes for this app. But the fact that it doesn’t allow one to open docs from the iOS Files area (Pythonista does) makes this app pretty much useless to me.
  • Developer Not Updating, No iPhone X Support

The developer is MIA. It *was* the best plain text editor with Markdown and Dropbox support, but, given that the developer barely updates it once a year and doesn't reply to direct/private messages on Twitter asking when it will be updated to support the iPhone X, I think it's safe to say that the app has been abandoned at this point. I'd be happy to change this review if the developer updates the app once in a while, but I've moved on to another app. I don't love it as much as I loved Editorial, but I'd rather support another developer who is still improving his app than try to work with software that isn't getting the attention it needs.

Thank you for this great app but it’s been quite a while and it would be nice to see an update for the screen size of iPhone X.

Great app. Well worth the price. Easy to implement the taskpaper syntax.
  • Pretty good! Needs iPhone X support.

So I'm not sure what the 1-star guy right before me was talking about. All the features he complained about not working, like getting back to the doc menu, work fine for me, and I've never experienced any of the bugs he cited. This app is a great idea, and is implemented quite well too. If you're a fan of TaskPaper like me, or just need to edit some code, you'll love it. Still, I'm bummed by the lack of iPhone X screen support and the general pace of updates. I'd also like to have iOS 11 Files app integration, so I don't have to go through Dropbox or the share sheet to get files into the app. Fix the iPhone X screen thing, and I'll revise my rating to 5 stars.
